Three Tips to Avoid Split Ends

Split ends are everyone’s nightmare. They cause frizzing and general hair disorder. When you are trying to grow your hair out, the last thing you want to have to do every two to four weeks is trim off more of your hair because of split ends. Fear not, there are a few things you can do to avoid the devastation of dry and split ends.

The first thing you will want to be sure to do is stop washing your hair so often. Unless you work a very energy intensive job or get dirt and other assorted junk in your hair every day, there is no reason to wash it so frequently. That doesn’t mean don’t shower, by all means shower everyday. Just don’t use shampoo everyday, as this strips the hair of its natural oils and dries it out much more quickly.

Second most important thing to do is to use a quality brand for your hair care product. This requires knowing how your hair reacts to different shampoos and conditioners, and using the simple system of trial and error. It is important to note that it is often necessary to change your hair products depending on the season. Dry winter air affects the level of moisture in your hair differently than humid summer air, for example.

In terms of everyday hair care, try to avoid using any type of heat processing. The constant use of hair dryers and curling/straightening irons pulls the moisture from the hair. Split ends are caused by lack of moisture, primarily, so holding on to the moisture that your hair has naturally is the easiest way to prevent and avoid split ends for a longer period.

Split ends will arrive eventually, as the hair dries out slowly. But you can definitely slow down that process by taking careful care of your locks and doing what you can to help them retain moisture. Applying moisturizing products to your hair regularly will also help to retain and boost the moisture level.
